Prompt 1: Dreaming big

Dear Board,

I wanted to invite you to take a step back with me, think big and imagine the long-term. Where do you think CPA might be 5 years from now? What do you imagine for us in 10 years?

I want to invite you to really think about this. The staff team we’ve been able to put together is tremendously capable. The trust we have with some of our members is extra-ordinary.

So, what’s holding us back?

As I’ve been asking myself this question, I think it’s partly the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and who we believe we can become. For example, I believe at our core, we are relationship-building organization. It’s how we started. It’s how we’ve grown. We take time to really get to know our members, listen to their needs, find the common pain points and then build an offering around that. As part of this same story, I’ve also told myself that we’re not a tech company. And I’m starting to see that as a self-imposed boundary (that may not be right). Why can’t we build an online tool that get’s huge adoption?

If what we identify members’ need is for more trusted spaces where they can bring their challenges and hear from peers how they’re addressing those same challenges…. then we should try to meet that need. I can imagine an online community that helps us better identify which are individual challenges and which are broader problems.

If we can help school and faith leaders gain perspective on their most vexing questions, I believe we can create a truly helpful community of insight and perspective and connection that could be add an important dimension to our future.

What do you believe we could become? What are your wildest dreams for CPA?

Here’s a short video I recorded asking you to take some time to think about this:

Action: Can you take 10 minutes to write down some of your thoughts, visions, dreams for CPA?  It would be great if you could share them with me or the group before Monday. I’m hoping to craft an exercise at the start of the board meeting that will include input from everybody on the Board.

I look forward to meeting together on Wednesday, and feel like each of us taking some time before the meeting, could help take our discussion to the next level.

Send me or the group your write-up before Monday, February 19, 2018.
